Main Skills
This game jam project was created in 4 days by a team of 3. I took on both art and design responsibilities for this project.

Asset Creation
I have established the art style for the game and created all digital assets present in the game. Vector graphic were created using Figma and illustrations were created using Photopea (free Photoshop equivalent)

UI/UX
I established the layout and content of each screen in the game. To be as time efficient as possible, I iterated on the layout in a very loose sketchy style before creating any of the visual targets and UI components in the game

Physical Prototype
Collaboratively designed the "Gamble" mechanic as an addition to Blackjack. Used physical mediums to quickly prototype and iterate on the rules, making sure the game was fun in the most time efficient way possible.
Gambling with your life

The theme of the jam was Countdown. We incorporated that concept into the core mechanic and narrative of the game. Every year (round) the player pays a round of Blackjack against Death with an ever diminishing deck of cards that represent their remaining years.
The unique mechanic called "Gamble" allows players to "cheat" by being offered a series of trick cards with special effects, that they can use to get closer to 21. When winning a round they gambled on, all cards including tricks, get added to the playing deck, extending the player's life.
But there's a catch, if the player loses a round they gambled on all cards and years are taken away.

Making Cards

For the game jam game I have created 2 full decks of cards styled differently to represent the play and the ticks decks.
We designed suits on the trick cards are unique. They kept the overall shape language the classics but were redesigned to suit their association with the caracter of Death.
Keeping the colours consistent across the two decks mades them feel like like counterparts of each other while the inverted use of colour made the tricks feel special and almost dangerous to use.

Striking visuals and fun mechanics
Player enjoyed the opinionated retro look and had a good time engaging with the "gamble" mechanic. Here are some of their lovely comments.
